10 Curly Hair Tips Every Girl Should Follow

Do you have curly hair? If yes, then you already know that your curly hair can give you a lot of trouble sometimes. It won’t stay the way you want it to be and it always appears messy and unkempt no matter how much time you spent trying to style it. However, if you think that only those with straight hair are blessed with gorgeous locks, think again because even those with curly hair can also have silky smooth, bouncy, and healthy-looking hair as long as they follow these 10 tips

1. Protect Your Curls

Since curly hair is essentially already dry and brittle, it’s easy to damage it with heat styling and chemical treatments. Be sure to use a heat protectant when you blow-dry your hair or turn to a straightener. And steer clear of any harsh chemical treatments, as they can make your curls look limp and shriveled.

2. Reduce The Heat

Washing and drying curly hair with high heat tends to be rough on your strands, which is why it’s important to get in a habit of using cooler water temperatures. Colder water isn’t as damaging, but it can still help reduce frizz.

3. Eat Well

One of the main reasons curly hair goes bad is because people don’t take care of it. Foods like dairy, meat, and oils can wreak havoc on your curls. Cut back to only consuming these foods a few times a week, if you must have them at all. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to ensure that your body gets everything it needs to keep your hair in tip-top shape.

4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

It sounds like a no-brainer, but many of us don’t drink enough water. It’s important to keep your hair healthy because it loses moisture when you don’t hydrate it properly, making it more prone to frizz and breakage. Start drinking at least 8 glasses of water every day to give your locks all they need. And remember: water is not only good for hydrating curly hair—it also keeps skin and nails healthy! So drink up!

5. Sleep Well

Make sure you’re getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Sleeping will help your hair grow, and it’s also imperative for maintaining energy levels and overall health. Make it a priority to get in bed early enough to ensure you’re sleeping well each night. Try to schedule workouts around your sleep schedule, too! For example, try to do your workout first thing in the morning before work or at night after work is over for good measure.

6. Avoid Stress

Stress is one of those things that can make even straight hair frizzy. And once it starts to become dry and frizzy, it can often be more difficult to control as well. One of my favorite pieces of advice I’ve gotten from my stylist is to avoid washing your hair every day—not only will your hair thank you, but it’ll also lead to less breakage and smoother curls.

7. Eliminate Frizz

We don’t want to tell you how to live your life, but if you have curly hair—and even if you don’t—we highly recommend eliminating frizz from your daily routine. Using a flat iron or a curling iron on damp hair causes serious damage (from burn marks to split ends), and isn’t as efficient at styling anyway. The best way to eliminate frizz? Wash it!

8. Keep It Simple And Easy To Maintain

Let’s face it—the busier we get, the more we look for convenience in products and techniques. If you have curly hair, there’s a good chance you’ve fallen prey to high-maintenance hair care and styling products that overpromise and underdeliver. If you have naturally curly hair, it can feel like an almost impossible task to figure out what works best for your specific curls.

9. Experiment With Products And Treatments

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to your hair care routine. Experiment with products and treatments until you find what works best for your hair type, including cleansers, shampoos, serums, sprays, and more. Don’t be afraid to mix different ingredients together; in many cases, that can yield unexpected results—and new favorites! However, you treat your locks is up to you. Just remember: Be gentle and considerate of your hair.

10. Do Not Brush Too Much

The number one curly hair tip for girls is to NEVER brush your hair when it is wet. Brushing curls only makes them frizzier and more tangled. If you must, use a wide-toothed comb to gently detangle your curls as they dry.
